Introduction: Missed nursing care is any aspect of patient care that is omitted or delayed, increases adverse events, increases the number of days/hospitalization and readmissions, and increases the number of days of hospitalization and readmissions. Objective: To describe lost care and the reasons for it in an orthopedic hospital. Method: Descriptive, observational, cross-sectional study. Probabilistic sample of 166 nursing professionals of a third level orthopedic institution responsible for direct patient care, selected by simple random sampling, from January to May 2024. The MISSCARE scale validated for the Mexican population was used to collect data. Descriptive statistics were applied for data analysis. Results: In basic care, patient feeding (39.16%) and assistance with ambulation (27.71%), individual needs, administering medications on schedule (21.69%) and attending multidisciplinary team visits (18.67%) were most frequently omitted. Continuous assessment care is the least frequently missed. The main reasons for not performing care are related to material resources. Conclusions: Continuous reassessment care is prioritized; however, the results of this study reveal that basic care and individual needs interventions are the most frequently missed, and material resources the main reason for omission of care.
