Benzodiazepines (BZD) are psychoactive drugs known for their depressant effect on the central nervous system, and are among the most prescribed medications. Its irrational use is a global public health problem. The objective of this document is to make known how the prolonged treatment with BZD leads to dependence and addiction, as well as to promote awareness among hospital health personnel about the adverse effects that its use entails. It is important to highlight the participation of nursing in the support and guidance of strategies for the reduction and suspension of BZD consumption.
