Introduction: Immature pancreatic activity can have consequences, such as impaired bowel elimination and some degree of jaundice, in preterm newborns. For the proper evolution of the newborn it is important to promote breastfeeding, as it not only provides essential nutrients, but also supports the digestive process in newborns with immature pancreatic function. Objective: To raise the quality in the management of the care of a preterm neonate and to promote healthy practices and lifestyles for their optimal growth and development. Method: It was developed through the stages of the nursing care process focused on a neonate at 33-5 weeks of gestation, following Dorothea E. Oremâ??s general theory of self-care for data collection. Results: The main nursing diagnoses that led to care plans focused on the intervention of the assessed neonate are presented, as well as the evaluation and objectives achieved. Conclusions: The prescription of care based on scientific evidence allowed us to evaluate the results in a satisfactory way in each plan. The clinical evolution of the newborn led to his hospital discharge and breastfeeding practices were promoted with the mother as part of the treatment and other benefits for development and growth.
