Introduction: Caring for premature babies, through the kangaroo mother method, has important benefits. The knowledge of the nursing staff is related to the mothers’ satisfaction with the method; emphasizing the importance of adequately informed nursing interventions in such care programs. Objective: To provide a scientific basis for the most relevant activities of the Classification of Nursing Interventions (NIC) 6840 Kangaroo care, and Classification of Nursing Outcomes (NOC) 0117 Adaptation of the premature child, to improve the care of the premature child. Method: Systematic review in Spanish and English with a range of five years of updating, using the Health Sciences (DeCs) and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) descriptors. Results: The development of 14 indicators NOC 0117 Adaptation of preterm infants and substantiation of 11 interventions selected from NIC 6840 Kangaroo care were found. Conclusions: Studies have highlighted the positive impact of kangaroo care on weight gain and reduction of neonatal mortality and hospital stay of premature infants (NIC 6840), which emphasizes the importance of nursing interventions to promote the well-being of premature babies and educational processes for mothers.
